Semi-retirement for MSU Graphic design professor

Graphic design professor is stepping down from teaching but isn’t saying goodbye to MSU yet

MANKATO, Minn.—After 44 years of teaching at Minnesota State University, Mankato associate professor of graphic design, Harlan Bloomer, is set to retire next week when the semester concludes.

Regarding his decision to retire, Bloomer said he thought it was time to move on to another phase in his life.  Bloomer accepted the teaching position in the MSU Art Department soon after he received his MFA at the University of Michigan in 1968 and hasn’t left since.

“It was a good fit for me,” said Bloomer. “There was no design program when I came here … and I had a chance to build the program.”

Not going anywhere

 For Bloomer’s colleagues and returning students in the fall, this is not goodbye. Chair of the Art Department Jim Johnson said Bloomer will continue to direct and manage MSU’s Conkling Art Gallery as an adjunct next year.

“He does a great job at that,” said Johnson. “There are lots of communications he has to maintain with the various people that we want to bring in and coordinate when they’re going to be here and how much they get paid and who’s going to pick them up from the airport.”

Bloomer took on responsibilities as the gallery director years ago with basically no compensation or course reduction. Johnson admitted it’s a lot of work.

“I tend to be a team player and I like to contribute,” Bloomer said. “I’ve always been apart of the departmental committee structure.”

As an adjunct next fall, Bloomer will have time to do some of his own design work.

“I haven’t really had a lot of opportunities to do much freelance and I’d like to do that,” said Bloomer.

Search continues for new graphic design professor

The art department conducted a search this year for someone to fill a tenure-track vacancy but couldn’t find anybody who met department standards. Instead, the search is on for a fixed-term candidate to teach the next academic year while they continue to review applications for a tenure-track vacancy.

“We changed the requirements up a little bit to ease up a little on some of the technical aspects to try to encourage a little larger pool,” Johnson said. “A tenure-track vacancy in graphic design can be hard to fill because there are a lot of schools looking to fill similar positions.”

David Rogers, associate graphic design professor, is the most recent member of the graphic design staff. He will take over Bloomer’s courses that emphasize typography so the department is looking for a candidate to take on interactive classes.

“We hope we can find someone to take on the interactive role that I’ve been playing for the past two years,” said Rogers.

The art department hopes to hire a tenure-track graphic design professor who has:

  • Interest in interactive design
  • Strong design sensibility
  • Expertise in new computer technologies
  • Commitment to teaching and research

Other qualifications and responsibilities can be found on the Notice of Vacancy for the position.

Rogers said they hope to get the fixed-term position filled early summer.

Why Bloomer will still be missed

Although Bloomer will be back in the fall, the department and his students will miss his presence in the classroom.

Graphic design student, Lee Thorburn, is a senior and had Bloomer as an adviser. Thorburn said he doesn’t think the department will find someone like Bloomer to replace in the classroom.

“I think it’s just going to be really hard to find somebody who has all the qualities that he has. I guess just somebody who’s willing to work with you and have a good time,” said Thorburn.

Matt Willemsen, associate design professor, said Bloomer was a nurturing faculty member who cared a lot about his students. Bloomer befriended Willemsen and helped him adapt to the program when he arrived to MSU in 2005.

“It’s hard to predict what kind of dynamic you’ll have with a new faculty member. The 3 faculty members in design right now, including myself, have a good relationship–a good report. And we enjoy each others company and I think that’s important because it allows us to push the program into positive directions and we’re hoping to find someone who can maintain that dynamic relationship with us.”

On Thursday, students of the MNSU AIGA Student Chapter concluded their meeting with a surprise celebration for Bloomer.

USA Today’s Steve DiMeglio will speak at MSU’s Media Day

MSU alumni DiMeglio will share his journey from MSU to Senior Golf Writer for USA Today

MANKATO, MINN.— Minnesota State University, Mankato’s mass media department will host its media day with guest speaker, Steve DiMeglio. Graduating from MSU in 1987, DiMeglio is coming back Tuesday, April 24th to speak at the annual scholarship celebration.

DiMeglio’s address, “Mickey Mantle’s on Line 1, Steve!” will be held in the Ostrander Auditorium from 4 to 6 p.m.

Once the sports editor for the MSU Reporter and intern for the Mankato Free Press, DiMeglio’s ambition at MSU did not go unnoticed. The Senior Golf Writer for USA Today received MSU’s Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award in 2010. Professor Ellen Mrja, DiMeglio’s former advisor for the Reporter says,

“He was absolutely the most dedicated sports editor our paper has ever had. His sports pages were more than scores; they were interesting, informative and consistently outstanding.”

DiMeglio’s pursuit to success has bid him opportunities to provide coverage on legendary presidents and athletes such as:

Using Audacity

Audacity is a free and user-friendly audio editor for recording, slicing and mixing audio.

I have some familiarity with editing audio for previous classes but not with using Audacity. To get an understanding of the software, I worked through Professor Mindy McAdams’ Audacity Basics tutorial.

McAdam’s tutorial was extremely easy to follow and I recommend her tutorial if you are interested in learning to use Audacity. McAdam’s reveals, Audacity’s commands are very similar to those in Microsoft Word, and the buttons are exactly like the ones you would find on a VCR or tape recorder.

I was surprised to see how easy Audacity is to use. If you know how to cut, copy and paste on Microsoft Word, you will certainly know how to cut (slice), copy and paste (mix) audio.

Editing audio may be an important tool in my future endeavors. With this knowledge, I will be able to gather several audio clips and edit them into podcasts, online news stories, multimedia slide shows, and other presentations as a means to better capture the attention and communicate to listeners/users.

Analysis of Washington Post’s ‘Top Secret America’

For two years, more than 20 Washington Post journalists investigated the enormous national security buildup and expansion in the United States after the 9/11/01 attacks. The project is known as “Top Secret America.”

The articles published in this series as well as an online database report and illustrate the extent and intricacy of the government’s national security and intelligence system through interactive maps, videos, photo galleries, and other graphics.

With the extensive and detailed coverage of 45 major government agencies and lists of 1000s of private companies they employ, the internet is best medium to facilitate this news package.

Here are some advantages of the Internet that the Washington Post has utilized in their story package for “Top Secret America”:

Audience Control
The audience, or rather users, are capable of choosing particular information they want and when they want it. This advantage allows users to be actively engaged in seeking and using information.

Time and Place Access
The news package offers unparalleled opportunities to reach out to its audience across time and space. The story package utilizes social media network sites like Facebook and Twitter, live Q&A on Washington Post’s Conversation, and a “Top Secret America” blog that audience members can subscribe to its RSS feeds.

Nonlinearity
Supposing users will read the methodology and credits as well as view the “Intro” and “Need Help” videos to further understand the interactive maps and story, this news packages allows individual users to experience information without a specified linear order.

Storage and Retrieval
The Washington Post favors the Internets ability to store an extensive amount of information and making that information readily available. They compiled 100s and 1000s of public records of government organizations and private sector companies into an online database with links to retrieve desired information with one click. The news package also links users to latest related stories around the web and an article index of published stories on “Top Secret America.”

Unlimited Space
The Internets unlimited space for information is key for this news package. The Washington post instead, focuses on making the vast information less complex without spatial and temporal restrictions.

Immediacy
The Washington Post can publish, update, or correct information almost instantaneously online and made available to its audience immediately.

Multimedia Capability
“Top Secret America” presents several types of media on the Internet. Included in this package are published articles with supported media such as photo galleries, multimedia galleries, videos, audio, interactive maps and graphics, and other graphics.

Audience Participation
This story package exploits many approaches to encourage audience involvement. The main infographic and map exploring the connections between government organizations and the various categories of work being done is interactive. As noted in “Time and Place Access,” users can call to Twitter and Facebook for commentary and call to action. Also incorporated in package, is a live Q&A section, as well as an opportunity for users to contribute by submitting information. These features provide the sense that the Washington Post listens to its audience.


Media Elements in “Top Secret America”

“Top Secret America” website package combines several forms of media content in one place. Videos in the package are effective in introducing the lead, breaking down the information, and guiding users through the interactive map and graphics. The information and interactive graphics are too complex to grasp without them, making them an even more valuable asset to the online story package.

The interactive “umbrella” graphic is a unique approach to organizing and consolidating the vast data to help tell the story. The 45 government organizations that make up “Top Secret America” is at the core of the graphic. The main view of the graphic shows which activities they are involved in. The categories of activities are represented by colors; for example, red represents intelligence activities and orange represents military activities. On the left of the side of the graphic are buttons in which the user can determine how he or she wants to sort government organizations by.

Above the graphic are the color-coded tabs that represent the activities and users are able to explore different kinds of top secret work. The interactivity allows for users to hover over activities or organizations with mouse to read supporting information without clicking on every cell. If user does however, want to click on a particular cell, they will be shown a company profile, number of top-secret work locations, rank for number of companies, and a circle graph which illustrates the relationship between government organizations and the types of work being done in “Top Secret America.”

I think this interactive graphic is the most effective and memorable in consolidating the most information and illustrating the links between major organizations and top secret activities. It is well-designed, uncluttered, and interactive.

The Washington Post also incorporates a Google Map for users to explore and see locations of all the agencies and organizations that engage in top secret. Users can click on each location to find information on counter-terrorism activities and organizations in that area. On the left side of the map are other options for the user to view data. For example, a user has the option to view only pre-9/11 or post-9/11 locations of counter-terrorism work. The map helps specify the locations but the interactivity is frustrating because it is difficult to control zoom specifications.

There are four parts to Washington Post’s “Top Secret America” investigation. Each part includes a text-based story, photo galleries and/or video and multimedia galleries. These photo and multimedia galleries are more informational than graphic, emotional, or intimate, since they provide “who, what, where, when” information.


To summarize, “Top Secret America” news package includes maps and graphics showing which areas are home to parts of the U.S. Intelligence community, as well as charts that detail which organizations are engaged in various categories of top-secret work. Essentially, these media elements reveal who does what and where.

If I could add or improve anything to this story, it would have been to encourage users to view videos first before exploring the interactive maps and graphics. The points of data in interactive elements are too difficult to navigate through without an accompanied video or text to help tell the story.

Poynter’s NewsU ‘Language of the Image’ Course

This morning I took “Language of the Image”, a free online course offered by Poynter. I had no idea Poynter offered free online courses and the experience was gratifying. Since I am pursuing both journalism and graphic design, I believed the Language of the Image course was relevant to my interests.

The course begins with classifying photos into 3 categories:

Informational: Informational photos simply identify a person, place, or event. These photos should only retain an identification value, thus neglecting story-telling qualities.

Passive: Passive photos show people in situations in which their main purpose is to have their picture taken for the newspaper. It is all that is attainable when the event is no longer taking place, and to such a degree, the photographer is accountable for making the best possible environmental portrait.

Active: Active photos show real people engaged in real events in real time. They are far more engaging and favored than shooting portraits after the matter. These photos allow photographers to produce images that inform readers about their community and the world in a way that informs, inspires, concerns, and evokes exacting emotions. It is the photojournalists’ responsibility to go beyond the surface facts and capture the essence of a situation or personality.

Next, the course identifies 14 single elements in photos that can convey the fullest, most accurate sense of the situations being photographed. The elements implicated are:

  • Graphic
  • Quality of Light
  • Emotion
  • Juxtaposition
  • Mood
  • Sense of Place
  • Point of Entry
  • Impact
  • Rule of Thirds
  • Perspective
  • Surprise
  • Layering
  • Moment
  • Personality Portrait

Most images utilize more than one of these photographic elements above to enhance their story-telling capabilities as well as several different combinations of elements that can make for a more effective image. Poynter provides several images throughout the course to attest to this.


Examples of identifying photographic elements for online story

The photo is from an article from USA Today about the snowstorm that hit Flagstaff, Ariz. today. The supporting photo is active and embodies elements of surprise, the rule of thirds, moment, and layering.

This photo is from an article from the New York Times about New York Mets owners, Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz, agreement to settle a federal lawsuit against them fir $162 million. This photo shows the two owners speaking with reporters outside the federal court. The photo is informational since it only identifies the owners of the New York Mets with meager identification in the background of the steps outside the federal court in New York.


What I will take from Poynter’s “Language of the Image” online course is to integrate several elements into producing images and experiment with different approaches (i.e. different combinations of photographic elements) to convey the most accurate visual interpretation of the story.

Obama’s Focus on Value of Higher Education

Obama administration looks to Post-Secondary Schools to Emphasize Value

It is the American Dream to go to college & graduate with opportunities for prosperity & success, but the reality of post-college debt is outweighing these values for students considerably.

Here’s the American reality:

  • The federal government allocates $140 billion annually into federal grants & loans
  • On average, students with loans graduate with more than $25,000 in debt
  • About 40% of students attending 4-year schools do not graduate
  • Only 40% of students attending 2-year schools graduate or transfer

Consequently, unemployment rates remain high & there are projected shortages of highly trained workers in many industries. In the last decade, literacy among college students has declined according to a commission convened during the George W. Bush administration that said American higher ed. has become “increasingly risk-averse, at times self-satisfied, & unduly expensive.”

Everyone Pays the Price

The price of college dropouts is not only costly for the individual but for taxpayers as well. About 1/5 of full-time students who enroll at a community college do not return for a second year, costing hundreds of millions of dollars annually in taxes.

The cost of higher ed. challenges the expense of success among college graduates. President Obama weighed in with a strong “yes” for post-secondary schools to be more transparent about both.

Minnesota,”Let’s Get Back to Work”

New program aims to improve airports and create job opportunities in southern Minnesota

Congress has appropriated $564 million to build and repair new and existing airports in Minnesota.

The spending is part of the government’s “Let’s Get Back to Work” program that aims to create job opportunities for laid off workers in construction and engineering.

President Obama said, “This is a small price to pay to help folks out who want to work.”

Yet Obama’s critics say the agenda is too costly. It is likely that this plan can cost up to $1 trillion if further developed.

Other airports in Minnesota receiving grants are Faribault, Jackson, Owatonna and Rushford.

Top Twitter search apps for journalistic means

Last week in class with Ellen Mrja, we examined several Twitter application tools that make for a more productive experience while discovering real-time news & information on Twitter. While it is safe to say there are loads of search applications, their interfaces, search options and overall effectiveness vary. Feeling overwhelmed by the endless list of services, I went on to explore some of these to find what search applications work best for me.

For class we are assigned to find  follow-up information on the conflict between Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and Planned Parenthood that began after Komen announced their decision to cut funding for Planned Parenthood. Since then, the new policy has been overturned after Komen abruptly faced a monumental stream of criticism on Twitter and Facebook. Over the weekend I visited several Twitter search applications to inquire any new information that has arose since Komen’s decision to overturn their new policy.

Here are the top Twitter search services I found accommodating:

Twitter Search

Twitter Search is hosted on the official Twitter server. I thought it was a good place to start my research before outsourcing to unfamiliar search applications. I searched “Susan G. Komen,” “Planned Parenthood,” and “Susan G. Komen Planned Parenthood.” Results of my searches showed avatars of tweeters, links to original tweets, time and date of tweet and what application he or she used to send tweet out. Twitter Search also gives you the option to view all tweet search results or just the top tweets. Here are 3 tweets I found valuable during my search from respectable newsrooms:

NBC Nightly News & CNN Breaking News tweeted links to new stories of Karen Handel’s resignation and her alleged involvement with Komen’s decision to cut Planned Parenthood funding. The Washington Post linked news story of Komen’s CEO Nancy Brinker’s letter in response to an open letter written by  Washington Post columnist Sally Quinn.

Twendz

Twendz highlights and analyzes conversation themes and updates new tweets as they happen. This search application alerts users of heating topics, conversation trends, and points of view. In the left column, users are also able to determine speed in which Twendz updates new tweets as well as provide a word cloud and list of popular subtopics. Here is a screen shot:

The main drawback I had with Twendz is that its results include tweets from all languages. However, I did stumble on a few tweets that provided reliable links for non-bias information. One in particular is the third one down on the screen shot from @nickc3. I viewed the tweet and clicked the link that brought me to a Banyan Branch blog. The info graphics showed that both Planned Parenthood and Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure saw a striking increase in Twitter mentions after the controversy rose but Komen was the focal point with a 62%/38% ratio in tweet mentions. The conversation hit its all-time high with 159,999 tweets when Komen made its announcement to overturn its decision while at the same time notable resignations from the organization were making news. What I found to be the most surprising from the blog is the news that Planned Parenthood actually came out of the controversy with more supporters than ever and in addition to new funding.

Tweefind

What I like about Tweefind is that you are able to filter search results to English tweets only or links only. It also provides links to related searches of the topic so you can expand your search with other popular keywords. Here is a screen shot:

The only advice I have for new users of Tweefind is to search for information using several alternative keywords to find the best results. I was able to find a link to a Huffington Post article about democratic senators launching “One Million Strong for Women” campaign that would be vital to include for a follow-up story.

Twazzup

Twazzup has actually become my favorite search application so far. It’s interface is my favorite because it’s dashboard of real-time stream of twitter updates, highlighted tweets, a list of top influencers; recent-related news stories, photos, and links that users are tweeting and retweeting about the searched topic. It also lists related hashtags, keywords, and top retweeted tweeters to the searched topic. I searched “Susan G. Koman AND Planned Parenthood. Here is a screen shot:

I utilized this search service last and discovered all of  the  round-up information I found for the Komen and Planned Parenthood story could be found using Twazzup’s dashboard features. The only issue here is there are too many broad results instead of the best results.

If you haven’t used one of these Twitter search applications I urge you to take a few minutes on each one and navigate through the process to see what’s being said right now and most importantly, to find see if some of these search apps work for you .
